Guidelines for solving a word problem: |
|
1 | Read the problem carefully. Find out what is being asked for. |
2 | Write down all the information that is known including units (such as gallons, miles, seconds, etc.). |
3 | Determine what is unknown and label clearly including units. For example, x = the distance traveled in miles and t = time it took to travel the distance in hours. |
4 | Draw a diagram whenever possible and label it with all the information known with numerical values and unknown with variables. |
5 | Translate the English sentence into an algebraic equation noting “key” words. |
a | Words indicating addition: add, sum, (a number) more than (another number) |
b | Words indicating subtraction: subtract, difference, (a number) less than (another number) |
c | Words indicating multiplication: times, multiplied by, (a number) of (another number), twice, double, the product of |
d | Words indicating division: divided by, the quotient of |
e | Words indicating > or <: (a number or expression) is more than (another number or expression), (a number or expression) is greater than (another number or expression), (a number or expression) is less than (another number or expression), (a number or expression) is more than or equal to (another number or expression), (a number or expression) is less than or equal to (another number or expression) |
For example, the phrase “a number is two greater than three times another number” can be translated into an algebraic equation as x = 2 + 3y. |
